Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 plus leaks
Design: Next to no
bezels and a button for Bixby
The Galaxy S8 and its larger partner, the Galaxy S8 Plus, are all
set to be beautiful and quite unusual-looking smartphones. Leaks have
repeatedly shown a large, curved screen filling the front, and both are
expected to have the curved Edge-style screen, but may drop the Edge name this
time.
The latest leak pertaining to the Galaxy S8 shows the
device being used in the real world. The pictures come from Twitter user
@mmddj_china, and fall pretty much in line with previously leaked images that
we’ve seen.
Numerous leaks of the
Galaxy S8 have come through, and we now have enough information to pretty well
know what the phones will look like. In fact, based on leaked schematics and
images, Korean website DesignWoOs.com has created its own renders, showing in
great detail what it thinks the phone will look like. These renders line up with
leaks we’ve seen so far.
We were also recently treated to our first look at what could be
the logo for the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, courtesy of known Twitter leaker Evan Blass
A
previous leak gives us our first look at what may be the Galaxy S8 in action. A
photo has leaked on Chinese social media website Weibo and it was picked up by
outlet Android Pure. As can be seen in the photo, the bottom bezel is extremely
thin, and unlike previous iterations of the Galaxy series, there is no physical
button.
Another recent leak of the device is also the best look we’ve seen
at the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus yet. The leak comes in the form of a rendered
video from known Twitter leaker @OnLeaks and was first published on
MySmartPrice. If authentic, it leaves very little to the imagination, showing
both the front and the back of the device
While it looks like there are no bezels from the image, Blass
writes that the screen covers 83 percent of the front panel. Still, it means
the bezels will be incredibly thin — thin enough to get rid of the traditional home
button on the bottom of the device. Note that this model retains the Edge
display on both sides of the phone, just like the Galaxy S7 Edge.Blass and a
recent Guardian report said Samsung will have two devices, and both will have
an Edge display. One of the differences between the two will be size — one will
have a 5.8-inch display and the larger one is 6.2 inches. Both are expected to
offer 4K Super AMOLED screens. Previous rumors suggested the larger model will
be more powerful, and it may be called the “Galaxy S8 Plus” model.
Some rumors of the
specs of both model.

Because
of the larger screen real estate, the Galaxy S8’s aspect ratio is reported to
be 18.5:9, which is slightly different from the standard 16:9. Based on the
image from Blass, it looks like the S8 will feature a Type-C charging port and
speakers on the bottom, as well as the headphone jack. There doesn’t seem to be
any dual-camera option — but this could be the regular Galaxy S8 rather than
the S8 Plus. We haven’t been able to verify the image, so don’t take this
information as fact.
The live image leaked by Blass matches with a set of schematics of
phones said to be the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, created by Cnet Korea based
on a viewing of the unreleased phone. The images provide a set of approximate
dimensions. The Galaxy S8 measures 131mm long and 68mm wide, while the Galaxy
S8 Plus is 159mm long and 73mm wide.
For comparison, the iPhone 7 is 138mm long and 67mm wide, and the
iPhone 7 Plus is 158mm long and 78mm wide. Both the S8 and S8 Plus are said to
feature curved screens, rear fingerprint sensors, and 3.5mm headphone ports. A
USB Type-C charging connector may replace the Micro USB socket.A recent leak
from MobileFun gives us a basic render of a case for the device, and while it
isn’t too detailed, it does give us a look at some of the features we should
expect from the phone. This leak shows something we haven’t seen much yet — the
back of the Galaxy S8 Plus. In fact, based on the leak, it seems as though the
camera module will be a little wider on the Galaxy S8 Plus than that of the
normal Galaxy S8, suggesting we could even see a dual camera on the phone.
Not only that, but we can also see that the power button will
remain on the right rather than being moved to the left as previously thought,
as well as a USB-C port and headphone jack. The render doesn’t seem to show a
speaker grill for a top speaker — something that we do expect from the smaller
Galaxy S8. It’s possible that the render is incorrect, but there’s a chance the
Galaxy S8 Plus may not feature stereo speakers.
Previously, we saw a photo leak of what appears to be the front
panels of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. The leak is pretty much in line
with what we have already seen, showing a display that covers almost the entire
front of the device and does away with the home button. The leak comes from
DforDesign and it raises interesting questions about the placement of the
fingerprint sensor — namely, where the fingerprint sensor will be. It is
possible that it will show up on the back of the device, but some rumors also
suggest that Samsung will include an in-display fingerprint sensor.
A separate leak pretty much backs up all the other information
we’ve seen about the design over the past few weeks. The leak again comes from
MobileFun, and shows that the phone will likely have a USB-C port, which will
sit on the bottom off to the side, rather than in the center. Contrary to some
rumors, the case also shows a hole for a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Another leak gives a pretty good look at a phone that has a pretty
drastically different design than previous iterations of the Galaxy S series.
For one, the home button doesn’t exist anymore, and the screen has been
expanded to cover almost the entire front of the device. The most interesting
part? This leak actually comes from Samsung itself, which published a video on
its Samsung Display YouTube account. Of course, we don’t know for sure that
this video shows the Galaxy S8, but the design does fall in line with other
leaks, and if it’s not the Galaxy S8, it is another unreleased Samsung phone.
